After hitting #4 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and selling over 200,000 copies of their breakthrough single ‘Trojans’, Australian duo Atlas Genius will release their debut album ‘When It Was Now’ on May 13th on Warner Bros. Records. Their UK profile has so far been boosted by radio support from Zane Lowe at Radio 1 and XFM.
The album will be previewed by the May 6th release of the single ‘Symptoms’. Contrasting its delicate, restrained verses with a soaring and intricately crafted hook, ‘Symptoms’ encapsulates the duo’s dreamy indie-infused approach to pop.
Atlas Genius – the Jeffery brothers Keith (vocals/guitars) and Michael (drums) – built a studio in their home city of Adelaide where they wrote, recorded and produced ‘When It Was Now.’ Once their own studio was completed, the first song that they finished was ‘Trojans’. Released online, they pretty much forgot about about it. “We began to think that music was a pipedream and we had all gone back to university to pursue more realistic careers,” says Keith.
Unbeknown to them, the blog Neon Gold discovered the track on the Triple J Unearthed website and posted a review which stated that the track would “invade your head, all dressed up in a clever disguise of earnest vocals riding a hooky riff.” Checking the band’s email account for the first time in over a month, the band found that dozens of record labels, publishers, lawyers, booking agents and management companies from all over the world had contacted them.
Subsequently named as an iTunes Single of the Week in Australia and New Zealand, ‘Trojans’ quickly became a blog favourite reaching #4 on Hype Machine and soon began selling over 1,500 tracks per week on U.S. iTunes.
Signed to Warner Bros. Records last spring, Atlas Genius released the three-track EP ‘Through The Glass’. Tracks from the EP were remixed by Lenno, Goldroom and Xaphoon Jones – each of which hit the upper reaches of the Hype Machine chart, peaking at 1, 3 and 3 respectively.
Atlas Genius have since toured extensively with Imagine Dragons, Silversun Pickups and Wolf Gang, performed ‘Trojans’ on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and received over a million plays on SoundCloud.
